I'm not saying that's what it does. I'm saying that's what it's trying to do. Really, the characterization is so laughably inaccurate that I couldn't really get too worked up about it either way, except to vehemently repeat my opinion that nearly the whole thing was a travesty. On the other hand, it's almost like Karen Traviss has a bone to pick with the fans. If she didn't, then why else would she deliberately attack characters that some of us actually adore? Halsey and the Spartans are central to the canon. To shove them aside in favor of weaving a tale about ordinary human beings in extraordinary circumstances... it's like she's ripping the action figures out of our hands and tossing them in the bin, saying that we're "too old to be playing with toys". Maybe I'm just reading way, way too much into it, but that does seem to be her intent; to not only criticize the canon, but the fans as well. It's like she thinks we're a bunch of skinheads or something. Why else would she equate our heroes to fascists? Very disrespectful, if you ask me.
