The usual reason given is that if Truman hadn't dropped the bombs, they would have been forced to invade the Japanese mainland, resulting in the deaths of over a million people. Personally, I think the whole thing was kind of a put-up job. They wanted to impress the Soviets first and foremost; to cement the geopolitical position of the United States after the war was over. To be quite honest, I always found it rather creepy that a pack of mangy politicians took the work of scientists who were genuinely curious about the potential of such a device and fearful of what might happen if the enemy obtained it first, and used it to settle what amounted to a grudge, killing so many innocents in the process. Nerds can never win, can they? They're bullied in their youth, they're bullied in school, and when they're all grown up and assume their role as scientists and engineers, they're instructed by the powers-that-be to build their weapons of mass destruction for them so the military can go bully some more adults with the products of their scientists' labor. Imagine the nerve of these people, feeling like they can prove who's top dog on the block by riding on the backs of fellows with doctorates. Then, when something horrible happens as a result, the blame is laid right at the scientists' and engineers' feet by the media, because howling packs of misinformed Neo-Luddite journalists who can't tell a Torx from a Hex key and believe their cars run by transmuting gasoline into magic pixie dust think smart people are the root cause of everything that's wrong with the world. That's part of what ticks me off so much about Glasslands. Halsey is turned into just as much of a scapegoat for the S-II program as Edward Teller was for the atomic bomb, when in both instances, it was the lunacy of politicians that created and funded both programs. The scientists were merely tools to achieve that end.
