But I feel the : Bear and Traviss books differ drastically in terms of the style and pacing : that made the Halo games so popular. That's not to say the books aren't : enjoyable (they are) - they just don't provide the same adrenaline rush or : what-happens-next intensity that make me want to read one more chapter of : Fall of Reach or play the next level in Halo 2. In that sense, they don't : "read as the game plays." They don't provide that "adrenaline rush" because they probably aren't supposed to. The last few Halo novels have been quite different than those before; I would bet that this is because of (1) the authors and (2) the kind of stories that they need to tell. Glasslands doesn't have the rush because it's more of a personal, espionage kind of story. Cryptum and Primordium don't have that because they aren't focusing on the war as a whole, they are focusing on individuals during the conflict. People we can actually relate to. It looks like the next installment in that series will take us a bit further, but we'll have to wait to read it. My overall thought is that if a universe can be so well fleshed out as Halo or Star Wars or Gears of War or Firefly or whatever-else-you-want-to-insert-here, it can have stories told in almost unlimited styles and tones. Halo doesn't have a tone, Halo is Halo. If an idea or world is so well realized that it can garner such a following, I think it's more than able and deserving to have a much more varied manner of presentation (after all, before Halo how many other games had dedicated novels, interconnected storylines, etc.?). : To each his own, and I certainly understand the want to expand the flavors of : Halo books. But when 3 out of 4 first Halo books are written by the same : author (and we can just skip The Flood), it sets a precedent for how a : Halo book "should" read. To me, the Bungie games and Nylunds' : novels ARE Halo. They set the tone, and it will be interesting to see what : changes to that tone Halo 4 will make, because the Bear and Traviss novels : have definitely charted a new course. Hmm... I'm guessing that's just personal opinion, as you said. I've been a Halo fan just as long and I have no problem with the recent installments. They are just new and interesting takes on stories told in a universe I love.
