In Response To: Why I Hate Glasslands (Train Dodger) "Parangosky criticizing Halsey for being immoral is like Emperor Palpatine criticizing Darth Vader for being immoral. It's completely ludicrous." This deserves slowclapping.gif But seriously, I agree with your assessment of Glasslands. The interesting thing is that the events themselves don't bother me too much (except the complete lack of anything interesting inside Onyx), it's the way Traviss elevates a particular side. I can totally understand why Parangosky hates Halsey - by creating the Spartan II program, Halsey gets all the credit for Master Chief, and therefore, humanity's salvation. I can understand that Halsey is probably due for some reprimanding from somebody, and it makes sense that Parangosky would relish it. But why must Parangosky's and Mendez's criticism of Halsey be placed on a moral pedastal for the reader? If the criticism came from a 3rd party, then I would be more interested in hearing it. Perhaps our gut reaction of defending Halsey and the "unfairness of it all" is exactly what the author was going for. It builds a chip on Halsey's (and our) shoulder, and makes us side with our "hero" as she is dragged through the mud. Unfortunately Traviss just goes too far in tarnishing Halsey's character. Yes, Parangosky's hypocrisy makes sense. But the book also pits Mendez and several SPARTANs against Halsey, which makes for too many characters that used to like Halsey, but now despise her. It seems as though everyone in the book hates Halsey - it stops feeling like the characters are criticizing her and more like the author is criticizing her. If one or two characters would have stood by her side (an AI, a SPARTAN, somebody), it would have helped balance it. (Disclaimer: It's been a very long time since I read the book, if a character had a minor line or two in an attempt to stick up for her, it was so trivial that it made no impression on me in comparison to the overwhelming negativity towards Halsey that spanned entire chapters.) Also the complete shift in ONI's PR modus operandi is literally unbelievable. In previous books, ONI could completely seal off an entire planet from "harmful" information about the war for more than a quarter-century. In Glasslands, you get the feeling someone on Parangosky's staff is about to publish a scathing tell-all and she's got to start the blame train before the beans spill. It turns ONI into an organization that's too worried about its image when it had previously just been an all-encompassing entity, unconcerned with morality. That's what made it so interesting - the only hope for humanity is the product of a complete disregard of human rights. I hope The Thursday War starts to turn things around - it's time for the good guys like Halsey to get back in the field and Parangosky and others to get their comeuppance for laying all the blame on others and getting off the hook. Also, I seriously hope Nylund will make a return to Halo fiction soon. He knows what the ladies like - Halo books that read like the Halo games play.
