In Response To: Why I Hate Glasslands (Train Dodger) *Slow clap* You've iterated near every issue I have with the book. The blatant discrepancy between how the real world works and how KT's rose-tinted happy land works, how she forgoes all logic to get her characters to talk about just how evil Halsey is, and so on. You're also spot on about the characters lacking their own individual voices; there's this jarring sense of the main characters existing in a hive-mind that permeates all of KT's writings. And no, constant sardonic banter won't fix that. Oh and the other guy's apologism was almost painful to read. Most of his arguments can be distilled to "This part is perfectly justifiable - see, the book justifies it right here! If you don't agree you're probably just an immature teenager and you should go back to watching Michael Bay movies." I especially like how in one paragraph he maintains that the WWII atomic bombings can't be compared to to the Spartan-II program because they were against an enemy nation, and then a few sentences after that he states that it's unjustifiable to kidnap kids who might grow up to become terrorists because of the environment they're living in. I don't know, but those seem pretty similar to me. I'm also wondering where all this talk about KT's work being "deep" or "nuanced" came from - just reiterating your one-sided, narrow points about a morally gray issue over and over again doesn't make your work deep. To me, Nylund's work was far more nuanced because at least his exploration of the moral issues of the Spartan-II program had some finesse. It was never particularly complicated as far as literature goes, but neither is Glasslands. Yet some people seem to have this idea of KT's work being of some higher literary standard than the previous novels.
