I meant not at all to disrespect or second-guess the decision to bomb, and the reasoning for doing so. Rather the reason I hold them in a similar light is for the simple tragedy of human life lost. I don't doubt for a second that had we not bombed Japan there certainly would have been more people killed then otherwise, but in my mind that doesn't detract from the fact that, still, a lot of people died. Truly I understand your displeasure with the analogy, and in hindsight perhaps it was ill-advised. But I hope I'm now clear that it wasn't made from some supposed moral high ground but instead because the whole war sucked. I believe that one was a necessary evil, and the other a sadistic evil, but both were evil. I think humanity will always wage war, it's in our blood. But that doesn't mean we have to be okay with killing people for different beliefs. I re-read this and even to me it sounds like I'm some sort of lovey-dovey hippy. I'm not, but I stand by what I've written. I hope it's understood that I'm not trying to downplay or disrespect any of the events that took place before I was born, just give my opinion on how difficult some of the choices must have been.
