Concerning 'Glasslands,' while it's far from my favourite 'Halo' novel (that would be FoR), it isn't my least favourite either ('Primordium'). But of the Halsey debate... To be honest, I can see where the hate comes from. Halsey, Mendez and Parangosky kind of run the morality gauntlet, but for each of them...well, Mendez kind of struck me as projecting guilt. There's a line I particuarly remember from him (paraphrased) that "you don't realize how bad the sewer stinks until you step outside it." To me, his character struck me as being consumed with guilt, and all he can do is project that guilt onto Halsey. It doesn't say anything nice about his character, but I can see it happening. Believe it or not, I kind of liked Halsey's conversations with him. On one hand, I could see from the writing that Traviss is anti-Halsey. Yet I still felt there was enough leeway to make up your own mind. Against Mendez, I personally thought that Halsey stood her ground. She isn't innocent, but unlike Mendez, accepts her guilt in a sense, as opposed to people like Ackerson. Parangosky though, really got to me. Her morality is about as flexible as a contronist, demonizing Halsey while conveniantly ignoring the Spartan-IIIs, and that she approved of Ackerson's idea personally, not to mention that the notion of ONI having no oversight over Halsey just made it seem incompetant. All in all, I consider 'Glasslands' to be okay. The tedium of the Covenant sections actually irritated me more than the ONI angle. Unfortunately, if 'The Thursday War' is any indication, we'll be getting more of Parangosky, ginger snaps and all. :(
