Military jargon, expansive : vistas, unknown alien technology, battlefield tactics, espionage, AI : hacking, one-liners, threats to the galaxy, etc. But was that really the point of Glasslands? The book wasn't terribly militaristic. Yeah, it dealt with espionage and such, but it wasn't about the fighting like Nylund's books were. Glasslands seems like it was written to serve a purpose (it was just a lead-in for future games and novels). I think it did a fine job of this. Yeah, it had a bit of a different tone. Yeah, its treatment of some characters was different. This didn't bother me. The book was written by a different author that obviously had different priorities (both personal and handed down by 343i). I was happy to see this take on the universe, same way I was happy to see Greg Bear's view of the Forerunners. Like Frankie seems fond of saying, 343i hired novelists to do these jobs, not writers. Those novelists have their own tone, their own style, their own way of doing things. I'm happy for this. I get something different, something interesting. It's similar to what happened with Halo: Legends. The art styles used, as well as some of the story telling techniques, were pretty different than what we had seen before. I loved it! I personally didn't feel like it hurt the canon and I enjoyed the visuals.
