In Response To: Re: Why I Hate Glasslands (Hawki) : To be honest, I can see where the hate comes from. Halsey, Mendez and : Parangosky kind of run the morality gauntlet, but for each of them...well, : Mendez kind of struck me as projecting guilt. There's a line I particuarly : remember from him (paraphrased) that "you don't realize how bad the : sewer stinks until you step outside it." To me, his character struck : me as being consumed with guilt, and all he can do is project that guilt : onto Halsey. It doesn't say anything nice about his character, but I can : see it happening. I see the same thing with the Arbiter killing Truth. I see the Arbiter as externalizing his guilt and projecting it onto Truth. Don't like what you have done or the consequences of your decisions? Blame the boss. Of course Truth was a bad person and he 1) lied to the Elites, and 2) betrayed them. But the Arbiter was happy to commit genocide. He used his religion as an excuse, to short circuit the, "is this right?" question. Or maybe the Arbiter genuinely wasn't troubled by that question. The Arbiter is such a cypher that I can't say what he actually thought about it. And Truth was only doing to the Elites what the Elites were more than happy to do the Humans. The Arbiter knew the kind of person that Truth was. Truth was only acting in character. Or, at least, he knew that Truth wasn't a nice person and was capable of ordering the extermination of a people. Was the Arbiter miffed because Truth broke a promise or were his squeals of outrage due solely to the fact that it was HIS people who were now targeted? Maybe KT will address this. But, getting back to the humans... Mendez was less to blame than Halsey. I think that she presented him with a fait acompli. The kids had been stolen, he now had to decide what to do about it. He chose to obey orders and make the best of the situation. That's not a great decision but it's still less bad than Halsey's actions. In our current society being a whistle blower is more of an option. But the human government in Halo is more dominated by the military than what we are used to. I'm pretty sure that being a whistle blower is less of an option in that society. Its probably too strong to call the human government totalitarian but I don't think that the Haloverse human society is a healthy place to live. The society seems a bit sick. Its not good to have the military running the show and its worrying to think that Halsey's project could actually have been considered and done. Are there any people in the military here? Would you take place in operations that steal your own citizen's children. Would you stay silent if you knew about it? What if it happened during the height of the cold war? Would that have made a difference? Apparently Frankie said that the UNSC was like Star Fleet (or was the comparison with the Federation?). To my mind they seem like polar opposites. What do you think?
