Games and books are different mediums, and : one shouldn't try to imitate the other for the sake of sticking to a core : subject. Likewise, I disagree that every piece of 'Halo' fiction should be : military sci-fi for the sake of it. My problems with 'Glasslands', : 'Cryptum' and 'Primordium' are with aspects of their stories rather than : their concepts, so to speak. Fair enough. I agree that the books and game should deal with the same subject matter and they should act as different mediums. But I feel the Bear and Traviss books differ drastically in terms of the style and pacing that made the Halo games so popular. That's not to say the books aren't enjoyable (they are) - they just don't provide the same adrenaline rush or what-happens-next intensity that make me want to read one more chapter of Fall of Reach or play the next level in Halo 2. In that sense, they don't "read as the game plays." To each his own, and I certainly understand the want to expand the flavors of Halo books. But when 3 out of 4 first Halo books are written by the same author (and we can just skip The Flood), it sets a precedent for how a Halo book "should" read. To me, the Bungie games and Nylunds' novels ARE Halo. They set the tone, and it will be interesting to see what changes to that tone Halo 4 will make, because the Bear and Traviss novels have definitely charted a new course.
