Military jargon, expansive : vistas, unknown alien technology, battlefield tactics, espionage, AI : hacking, one-liners, threats to the galaxy, etc. Yep, that's exactly what I was talking about, too. The change in tone between Nylund's books and these new entries in the canon reminds me of the differences between the anime Last Exile and its sequel, Last Exile: Fam of the Silver Wing. They replaced all the genuine military tactics and jargon from its predecessor with pointless fanservice directed at people who weren't even fans of the first show, but who represented a larger, more profitable demographic. All the aerial combat had been completely neutered of its former complexity, replaced with something you'd expect to see in a bullet hell shooter. Gone were Alex Row's rudder and heading commands, replaced with ships that simply flew in a straight line and blasted everything in sight. Lights, flashing colors. All very boring, if you ask me. That, coupled with the extremely grating plot and characterization, lead me to drop watching the sequel. Sure, it had its moments, but the whole thing just felt so hollow. Same thing with Glasslands; a change of writer lead directly to an extremely jarring change in the overall theme of the work. I attribute it partially to these writers working outside their respective fields of expertise. You can't write about jargon and tactics that you don't know, after all. In order to do the research to write a Halo novel, you have to actually read military handbooks like the US Army Field Manual, Sun Tzu's Art of War, and so forth. Maybe a few WWII memoirs, while you're at it.
