Expansion (General Vagueness) : This sounded good but quickly soured on me and I figured out why: it's the : brash tough guy with a heart of gold, as cliché as the day is long-- I was : going to say having someone who's a "good guy" (does apparently : the right things for seemingly the right reasons) be a complete jerk would : at least be interesting, but I remembered games revolving around jerks is, : not cliché exactly, but very common (apparently-- I haven't played one : unless Conker counts). Either way it sounds like they didn't characterize : him very well and while I won't entirely excuse that I'll also wait to see : it myself and at the risk of being accused of cutting Bungie too much : slack, they took significantly less time than usual to try to flesh out 5 : characters instead of the usual amount for two or three-- although now : that I type that it seems kind of messed up as they were rushed with Halo : 2 and managed to get the Chief better defined, have the Arbiter be a : pretty believable person, show Miranda Keyes pretty effectively, and lay : good groundwork for Regret, Truth, the Gravemind, Half-Jaw, and arguably : Tartarus. Oh my. Was that all one sentence!? As I wrote it, I knew it was cliche, but they didn't take the jerk character far enough. He wasn't as uncaring or jaded as I would have pictured him. The Prepare to Drop cutscene showed him as a playful jerk when selecting weapons and meeting Dare, but then he switched to jackass when he punches the Rookie. Dude. Miranda Keyes. "We need a new ship commander!" "How about Keyes?" "Wait, he's dead." "Well, how about another Keyes with the same attitude and we'll make him female to distance it from the original character!?" I just didn't find the character development I expected from Halo 2. Characters were not introduced or properly defined, and far too much emphasis on the Covenant... I just don't know if the groundwork was there, or if we (as players and forum-folk) just filled in the huge gaps they left. I assume you're leaving out the information gained from Contact: Harvest, right? Because from the game's writing, the Hierarchs weren't really all there. They were kind of just a new boss for me. : Maybe someone else should handle this part... I agree. I don't have any expertise in writing, I just read a lot. And after being exposed to some amazing TV shows and movies lately, I just expected the same calibre from the writers for Halo.
