There's a pair of lines between Buck : and one of the others that comes to mind, as well as the infamous comment : about a woman with... courage, and the Grunt combat dialogue that a lot of : people were mentioning a few weeks ago. Joe Staten was right when he said : they don't really have much "coarse language" (or whatever : phrase he used) in the Halo games but I'm pretty sure it's increased a : little bit with each game, thereby getting more realistic. As for the : detective story thing, they said they were going for something like that : and I suspect it was made much harder by having the main character never : speak. For me, gritty is to coarse language as Terror is to Horror (In movie terms) Horror leaves you with some unpleasant images of teenagers being hacked to pieces by a guy in a hockey mask. Terror leaves you wondering "What if that was me locked in the basement with my foot hacked off?" Coarse language is easy - throw in a random swear word like the proverbial rapper. Gritty for me would have involved finding evidence of major battles on the Streets at night - things that indicated executions or last stand battles. Maybe even Romeo losing use of one of his arms and realising he'll never hold a sniper rifle again. The best movies can create feelings of terror without using gore. In the same way, you don't need coarse language to make a game gritty. In no way was the Rookie ever going to be "gritty" - he's a glorified camera. The other characters could have been expressed in a much darker manner. Watching Buck ambush a squad of Covenant using his knife to remain totally silent and show zero remorse in dispatching a cowering Grunt. That would have been truer to his character than getting cut up about Dare. But, hey, that's just how gritty works for me. Some people like coarse language without basis (rap fans anyone...) and don't get me wrong about rap music. I've heard amazing rap songs that had a message and really got my blood pumping. It's just that these days it seems to all be about bitches and hoes and stealing someone else's beat. Let's not start discussing rap music. I'll be lost.
