: Bungie's provided a good lead in the link you posted, but as you indicated,
I have an answer for 1) but it just muddies the waters for 2). From what I've seen, everyone has been assuming the Brute/Elite killings to be race-related. The Brutes sent in may just be a clean-up op - Truth decides Regret is too powerful an asset to allow into human hands, and possibly even believes that Regret's crew were too exposed to, well, the truth. The Jackals, Grunts and Hunters would be easy to convert back to the path, so Truth orders the whacking of everyone on Regret's flying bachelor pad. The Op begins in the city outskirts, on the opposite side to the human ground attack (Chief's crew in H2) so Elites are already wiped out in certain sectors of the city. ODSTs drop in, seconds after the Slipspace rupture, and find freshly corpsified Elites. As for why the Brutes were in charge, would you send Grunts to take out Elites? Hunters would be taken out by superior tactics, leaving Brutes the only ones (with the aid of overwhelming reinforcements) to take out the remaining Elites and get the smaller races back in line. For that to work, you have to assume that Truth picked up Regret's 4-day signal from Mombasa and dispatched a Brute ship to take him out. There's the fuzzy part. Slipspace travel. As awesome and well laid out as it was in the Fall of Reach, Bungie's writers just didn't seem to grasp the idea. So, in the game universe, we can say that Truth had access to a magical bunny that makes travel instantaneous. And ships invisible. In the logical (I guess we can assume it's the Waypoint method) universe, we say that a Brute Spec Ops or scouting vessel was nearby and repurposed for the clean-up operation. That's as close as I can get to answering those without Hulking out. Did any of that make sense?
