That would have been truer to his character than getting cut up : about Dare. I agree with you on the Disney-ness of the ODSTs and the general concept you outlined above. Buck was way too mild-mannered to have lived through some of what he was supposed to have lived through. I think most of that was because they wanted him to be some kind of romantic lead with Dare as the other half as part of their noir-ish theme, but maybe they should've given the role of improbable survivor to Romeo instead. Maybe the reason why he's an ass and a womanizer is because of the things he's lived through, whereas Buck could've just been a less-experienced but still veteran ODST officer who is now in charge of this group for the mission. That would also help explain Romeo's motivation for his attitude towards Buck, and would also allow Buck to be not-insane so he could be "the guy" for Dare. Don't have a clue as to how to fix the Dare character, however. She seemed more "soldier" than intelligence officer to me.
