You know, like luring him into a trap? Pretty good motive. I also thought that the reason Cortana stayed on High Charity (in Halo 2) was to trap Gravemind in an attempt to kill him. After finishing Halo 3's campaign and listening to Cortana's mostly senseless rambling, I've wondered if Cortana was faking her distress to get the Chief to find as her fast as possible so the Chief would light the ring and kill Gravemind? Mere speculation on my part :)
