Earth was discovered late, some time fairly close to the array activation. It was outside of the Maginot Sphere and it was precious to the Forerunner. GM was powerful outside of the sphere, Earth was far away from the sphere. So earth's saftey lay in the fact that it was unknown and obscure. It would NOT be in the Forerunner's interests to advertise its existence or location. The Forerunners put a direct portal to the Ark on Earth. They wouldn't want to advertise its existence. <- unguarded direct route to highest importance Forerunner installation this way. Also note that the Forerunners knew that GM could crack the keyships' key given time. <-mentioned in Halo 3 terminals. It would NOT be logical to find pointers to Earth on nearby Forerunner locations. It was probably only discovered because the Librarian was searching the galaxy for species to index. The Forerunners probably ignored hunter-gatherer societies until the array activation idea forced them to go looking for species to index. I think that, prior to Halo 3, Bungie were thinking in terms of a breadcrumb trail from Forerunner world to Forerunner world. In this version of the story Earth would have been known to the Forerunner. It would have been of some importance, a part of their civ, and there would be clues in Forerunner artifacts and installations. That's the way the story seemed to have been shaping up prior to Halo 3. The breadcrumb trail makes less sense in the Halo 3 storyverse.
