But that sort of criticism is : founded on the mistaken and illogical notion that in order to remain good, : constant change is needed. Not only is it not needed, it brings the risk : of losing the original magic. Maybe some examples of long-running TV : series could be relevant here, where they altered stuff and in due course : it all got a bit embarassing or 'past its prime' - not that I'm saying the : Halo series has become embarassing (and not that I'm an expert in : long-running TV series that lost their way, it was just an idea). Heh -- not sure if anyone's still reading this, but what the hell -- agreed, the "if it ain't broke" concept could certainly be applied to Halo 1. I definitely didn't enjoy the H2 campaign as much as the first one, but I'm finding H3 to have a lot of the "original magic" that 2 lacked. I think Bungie made some design choices for their second round that didn't work out and I wouldn't be surprised if it was largely because of the time crunch they were in to ship the game. They did a lot more up front work this time, planning the project well from the beginning so they weren't faced with the same mid-stream change of direction that caused so many problems with Halo 2. I think that's reflected well in the quality of the game, both from a visual/design perspective and from the "recapturing the missing fun" perspective. Personally, I think Halo 2 would have been just as popular if it had been a "clone" of the first game, but we'll never know. I've read your thoughts on H2 and agree with many of them, but clearly not as vehemently -- I played the game pretty consistently from launch to launch and grew happier with it over time. I didn't spend anywhere near as much time in the campaign as I did with Halo 1 and I imagine that played a big part in your disappointment, since campaign seems to be where you spend all your time (more power to you -- I loved the H1 campaign). I would argue that, without change and taking some chances that you'll screw up, you'll have a much harder time discovering those new "magic" moments. I think Bungie took some of those chances and came out for the better with Halo 3.
