| Halo 1, then 3....then....umm...errr... | |

In Response To: My views on Halo 3 (Rockslider) Rockslider, it's uncanny - your views on all 3 games match mine almost perfectly. I'm an infrequent poster here, but a longtime Halo nut - like since 1999-2000. I still remember me and my officemates drooling over the initial videos, counting days. When we finally got an Xbox, my two daughters and I played Halo for a long time - just campaign. It has soooo much replay value. In fact, we *still* play it. We love to grab Banshees on AOTCR and taunt the Gold Elite on the 1st bridge. I even made a film of it. He's hilarious- so much gusto, character. Halo had so much...depth - characters, animations, environments, varied battles. And for large stretches, it's somewhat nonlinear - it's up to you to decide where and how to proceed. Wanna explore the beautiful, expansive environs of Silent Cartographer or AOTCR? Go ahead - the baddies will be waiting. We were hyped for H2 like everyone else, especially after the E3 New Mombassa film. But ultimately disappointed. I was shocked to learn much later that they dropped all development up to that point and started over, but it really feels...off?...in the campaign - environments, weapon "feel", immersion, vehicle handling, etc. The bottom line, for me, is that the level design and the graphics / physics engine in Halo 1 are vastly superior. Not perfect - the later levels get repetitive, and there are other faults. But by comparison, after playing through H2 once or twice, there was little to draw us back. And I've played it just a few times in the last 2 years. So I was wary of Halo 3. But we eventually caved and bought a 360. And my opinion is like yours, though I have fewer qualms at this stage. (I've only played it about 15 hours so far.) But they went back to large environments where you could roam around, try different strategies, and for that I'm at least happy. I spent 2 hours exploring the Covenant level on foot - great fun! The graphics are top-notch too. My only real regret, besides the invisible walls, is that the guns and melee animations still feel like Halo 2. However I do like a lot of the new stuff, like the Chopper, the Spiker, and the Grav hammer! And the water effects are amazing. Most of my Halo over the past 4 years has been PC. In fact I manage a modded Halo PC server, and playing that game - even with its problematic netcode - is a great experience, especially at higher resolutions. Halo 1 looks breathtaking at 1280 x 1024, and it has all the best maps - Hang 'Em, Damnation, Danger Canyon, Sidewinder, etc. So...what I really want is for someone to update Halo 1 for the 360. High definition Halo...now that would be a dream. And they could add in Xbox Live to make it more than a pure eye candy upgrade. If that happened, I might even go in for Xbox Live!
