There is actually a path from the ledge that leads down behind cover to a cave-tunnel that lets you reach the area below. Its on the right hand of the ledge. I only mention it because I only noticed it two days ago. (so much for situational awareness) : I really don't think Bungie planned on letting players stay on that ledge : very long. If you do, you'll eventually be tempted to backtrack for : weapons and ammo-- only to discover you can't because Bungie changed the : geometry on you, closing the flare-lit tunnel you used to enter the area! Changing the geometry is naughty, the traditional big drop into the gully would have been more honest. You'd get fair warning. Still, I enjoyed this encounter (each time I played it) and I'm looking forward to replaying now that I know about the path. I think that it even gives better sniping opportunities against the Jackals to the left of the ledge. You will be facing them and maybe not as exposed to the Brutes and Grunts in front of the ledge.
