It was even one of my main criticisms of H1. : You'd still know the geography in advance, but unless the developer : cares to randomize that to some degree too - a radical step that wouldn't : necessarily be a good thing anyway because it could weaken the level's : identity - there's nothing we can do about that. But there's certainly a : lot that could easily be done to make encounters less predictable and : reduce any feel of pattern-play, if the developer wants to, and if they're : prepared to put the necessary thought into it. Whether it would make for : higher sales is another matter. Some gamers doubtless like to know : exactly what to expect in the next encounter, but patterns are certainly : not necessary for enjoyable gameplay. Oh, most definetly. My point was more that some form of patterns are just an unavoidable part of gameplay. We expect Hunters to attack in certain ways due to the fact their weapons, profile, and physical design demands it. You can't expect them to do a dive-roll like Elites. You can pretty much expect Grunts to panic when ever you get melee close to them. Though it would be hilarious to see one of them try to tackle a Spartan. So even for allowing variations, where an Elite may charge at you instead of taking cover, or vice-versa, there are simply some forms of pattern that are unavoidable. : As for the snipers thing, with normal Halo combat you're generally very free : to tackle things in all sorts of ways and with pretty free movement. But : with enemy snipers that's not really on. Your survival becomes much more : dependent on the precise advance knowledge you've memorized - in a way : that normal combat doesn't - and you're probably going to go through a : quite practiced routine of dealing with the threat. It becomes formulaic, : and that's where a lot of the enjoyment is lost for folk like myself and, : no doubt, Ross. With Halo2 that was unquestionably the case, but for Halo3 I just personally think that's a bit of an exageration, since like I said that particular point of criticisim can apply to any situation where you die once, and are then forewarned and therefore forearmed. Depleting the SL early on the Covenant only to find there are more vehicles guarding the entrance to the building that a hog has trouble overcoming. It's more like you should remember that Snipers are present in this area, just as you would know this is where a Phantom is going to come dropping off troops. You can still try to play anyway you like, but it's unreasonable to expect that having the freedom to act any way you will mean in every approach is going to end without you dieing. If so, than I'd have to say the enjoyment is lost because the enemies are so simple, unthinking, and weak.
