back up a second...

In Response To: Back up a second... (Hawaiian Pig)

: One of the main pullers of the Halo series, for me, was the amazing story
: telling. Aside from beautiful cinematics, much of the story was conveyed
: through the game. With an RTS, I find this a bit hard to fathom. The
: perspective seems a bit disconnected. You are not a Spartan battling the
: war on the field, you're this presence commanding an army and watching it
: blindly do your bidding. I have never played an RTS myself, so I may be
: way off here, but from what I've seen, it's basically Cool... for about 20 minutes, at least story
: wise. I can't see any story being more than

: No cool operation. No finding the "Silent Cartographer," obtaining
: an "Index" or foiling some diabolical Monitor AI from eons
: ago...

: Also, I'm curious as to how Spartans will be incorporated. The mainstay of
: Halo's story no doubt. RTS games seem to focus on large scale battles.
: That's cool. But Spartans, to me have always been the covert guys running
: very dangerous and specially important ops that you just don't see in RTS
: games. If I end up seeing a Spartan just battering his way down the field,
: I think I might tear up a bit.

: Now what I'd love to see, is my good old trusted FPS field view of these
: battles at the side as I run a harrowing mission to cripple Covenant
: communication and allow reinforcements to make one final drive that I have
: the chance to partake in. Badass. A guy can dream...

: Perhaps I'm too afraid of change, but as the saying goes "If it ain't
: broke, don't fix it." Slight changes to Halo occured on its way to
: Halo 2 and it caused an uproar. An entire genre switch can only mean a can
: of worms in this respect. While it's interesting to see the Halo universe
: from this perspective, it would seem that it was just never meant to be
: viewed and experienced this way (or at least ever since it became an FPS).

You have obviously not seen or played any good games within this genre and thus, have no idea what this kind of game can become. Red Alert Command and Conquer (playstation 1) did almost all the above pretty well. You need to think about a lot more than just: "Humans and Covenant are fighting over this land! *match occurs* Humans/Covenant have won this territory!" or "team A here,
team B here, fight." There are not only levels where you have to build up a base, but there are also levels where, using just 2 or 3 units, you escort civilians or allied spies or, shall we say, take care of the leader of an especially pesky organization. This could be one way to incorporate the spartans.

You can use objective points during the gameplay to help the story move along. If you have ever played both Star Wars Battlefront 1 and 2 (slightly different genre here), you will notice a slight difference in the gameplay. The controls are just about the same. The weapons are mostly the same. The vehicles handle the same. So then where is the difference? You actually feel like you are fighting for a reason (capture the holocron, asassinate the enemy leader, or protect bookcases full of information), instead of just a willy-nilly team FFA (capture all command posts, kill every enemy in sight). Anyway, right back to Halo. I'm pretty sure that they will incorporate a lot of story (or else I will personally -blam- THE -blam-IN' -blam- OUT OF THEIR -blam-blam-!!1!! *takes deep breath, straightens hair*). But seriously, they can include a lot more in this genre than you might think. Trust me, this game will rock (with a lot of people, at least). But, if all else fails to meet your satisfaction, you can gather your troops and fire a nuke. That's always entertaining. *grabs RAC&C, drops nuke, watches mile long blood bath, laughs psychotically*
