In Response To: Back up a second... (Hawaiian Pig)

HP, while I agree with you that the whole idea of a genre switch is somewhat disturbing, I have to say that you be overstating this 'situation' a little too much. Sure, this is going to be something completely new. But, isn't that what Halo is all about.

When the first Halo came along it literally set the bar for FPS and when Halo 2 came, again, it set the bar, this time for the multi-player experience. I think, and I can't stress that enough, that the thing that scares people the most is the fact that this isn't coming from Bungie.

Regardless of how good the game may, or may not, be, people are always going to be skeptical of the final results. For me, personally, the one thing that is going to scare me the most is how the music is going to be used and who is going to be producing said music. Again, for me personally, the music is one of the things that made the Halo experience what it was.

It's these things, those things that made Halo so good for you personally, that people equate with Halo. And it's these things that are always going to be on the forefront of any argument or discussion. I think we have to trust the judgement of those involved with the production of these new titles. As KP said, if they weren't worthwile they wouldn't have been made/going to be made.

We also have to remember that Bungie is the biggest group of perfectionists in the gaming industry. I mean, they've gone so far as to produce a Halo Story Bible. I'm sure that with the oversight they're going to give, the wealth of material they've created, and the creative drive they possess that these ancillary titles are going to live up the name Halo. And I mean ancillary, these titles aren't going to be the main body of the Halo universe, merely quick jaunts into other parts of it.

Let's put this into perspective for a second. Halo Wars is a Halo based RTS. HaloGen was a total conversion mod for C&C: Generals - Zero Hour(RTS). People were excited and enthused about the impending release of HaloGen. Now with the announcement of an actual bonafide professionally produced Halo RTS, along with an unrevealed Peter Jackson Halo game, people are getting cold feet. Why is that? I'll tell you why, because people don't want the feel as though they've wasted money on something that may be sub-par. And let's face it, the Bungie fan community, especially the Halo sect, are die hard fans. We expect the be awed, we expect the best possible product, we are quick to anger, and we are quick to express our opinions. But, we are also quick to adapt. Almost as quick as we are the jump the gun. Which is exactly what we're doing, jumping the gun. We're basing all of out assumptions on a pre-rendered announcement trailer and a few lines of text.

All these discussions about how these games are going to suck, rock, or give your grandpa a heart attack are all pointless. The fact of the matter is that if these games don't live up to quality that is expected of a game bearing the name Halo they may very well be cancelled, although it's unlikely. Think of this as the natural progression of the game. There are only so many things that can be done in a FPS. Take the Star Wars games for example. Sure there are a few horrible games in there, but for the most part they're pretty good and they range from FPS(Jedi Outcast) to RTS(Empire at War) to RPG(Knights of the Old Republic).

While the idea of seeing the Halo universe in a new light may frighten some and energize others, we need to embrace the fact that there's so much more out there in the Halo universe. Perhaps the name "Halo Wars" in itself wasn't the best choice of titles. If they'd gone ahead and called it something else that seperated it from the main Halo trilogy would we all be up in arms? Besides, the Master Chief, Cortana, and Sgt. Johnson aren't the only people fighting the Covenant.
