In Response To: Re: Back up a second... (Hawaiian Pig)

: Personally, I can already see it not "feeling" like Halo with the
: genre swtich alone. Probably because: A. I've never had the chance to sit
: down with an RTS (to be honest, it seems somewhat boring to point an army
: and watch it fight when you could be fighting yourself)

I can attest that an RTS done right is definitely not boring. The problem is that very few RTS's have been done right, and a lot of the companies making RTS's nowadays follow the Starcraft/Warcraft 'guaranteed sales' path. Those two games were good, but it's getting stale. So I'll try and list my favourite RTS's and what made them so great...

Myth: I really liked this one. You didn't mass produce units in the campaign with unrealistic 'bases'. [Which IMO is a big failing of RTS's nowadays.] You got what you got to complete a mission, which meant using tactics - setting traps, ambushes... You could even give your units names.

Rome Total War: Suffers from some major balancing issues and ahistorical units, as well as a really crappy AI, but once you're past all that, [Or download a mod.] the game really shines. This game also precludes the mass production factories that churn out people and weapons. Instead, you recruited your troops and then sent them out as armies to do battle - laying siege, attacking other armies, etc. I personally feel that this is what RTS games need to do, having factories that produce units on the battlemap just puts players in the "Tank rush/Zerg rush" mindset, and ruins any kind of tactical thinking. "I can just send these 500 tanklings into this obvious ambush, who cares if I lose, by the time the fighting is over, I'll have another 500 tanklings."

Total Annihilation: This one's pretty old, but nevertheless fun. I really liked the way weapons worked, where, unlike lots of other games, hitting enemy vehicles wasn't decided by some kind of dice roll. Gravity, arc, speed, height, wind, all had impacts on where a shot landed. Bigger, slow targets were easier to hit, smaller fast ones harder. There were even vehicle physics: Kill a bomber as it flies over your troops, and watch in dismay as it plows into them. You could even accidentally shoot down nuclear missiles with stray AA fire. [Or purposely with anti-nuke missiles.]

Warzone 2100: Another great RTS, this one's free and with a little searching you should be able to find a download for it. No guarantee it'll run though; the game's pretty old. The coolest parts of this game are the story [The FMV sequences are cool.] and the vehicle customization. You could develop the kinds of things each vehicle had. [And this keyed really well into the post apocalyptic setting of the game.] So for instance, you could build a half-track stryker with heavy machineguns, or a treaded stryker with a medium cannon, or a hovercraft with a small body using rockets. Lots of cool customization.

In addition to that were the really cool Commander vehicles. Basically, instead of putting a weapon on a tank, you'd put a lasersight on it, and then designate however many of your units were to be led by that commander. Each kill by any unit in that group was counted for the commander as well, allowing him to quickly gain experience. The more experience your commander had, the better aim all the units under his command had, and the more units he could have under his command. The commander also served as a quick way to move a large group of units, as everyone under his command would follow him. Thus, a battlegroup of 40 or 50 tanks with 5 commanders only needs you to click on those 5 commanders to move them all.

Homeworld: If you want an RTS that can tell a story, this is it. Seriously, go play this game. Probably the absolute best part of Homeworld is the story. The game was the first true 3D RTS. You can move your units, not only on a plane, but also up and down, or diagonally. Although the central game mechanics could've been better, it's still pretty decent, and the campaign will seriously keep you hooked. It's too bad the sequel turned out so bad.
