My position is as such:

Halo is Master Chief (I guess Arbiter too) killing dudes, from a mostly FPS setting.

But Halo WARS is NOT M-FING HALO. It is an entirely seperate game based simply in it's universe.

ILB was in one way or another taking the Halo Bible and making a "thing" out of it. A series of sound clips that told one kick-ASS story. It was good.

You've got the Halo books which tell the story from multiple friggin angles, including some that feel RTS in my book. It's not an FPS, and you aren't always in the thick of battle doing the tasks of one man, but it's still cool.

Now; WHAT IF Halo Wars puts you into the role of Capitan Billy Bob of the UNSC Friggate Toledo Kansas (or whatever the name of the ship was) Where you personally are commanding these guys with some commands. The individual marines wouldn't simply respond blindly but would work together on the battlefield trying to follow your orders to the best of their scared shitless little abilities.

Perhaps you would command the field from a variety of perspectives, including an 'orbital view' which would be live feed from space on your troops, overlain with tactical information. Moreso than many RTS before, Halo Wars could JUSTIFY a more traditional command view as not breaking the 4th wall. Other views might be each soldier's transponder camera to view the battle much as we witnessed the Flood through the eyes of poor Jenkins. Imagine THAT storytelling, where you need to send a team of soldiers to investigate a crash site; you watch them trot off in their warthog and then switch to helmet cam of one of the soldiers. After a while they come up on their objective and what in the world! Is that a flood? Then BLAM the screen tumbles as our woeful soldier misplaces his head as a result of a whipping tenticle. As the camera orients itself upwards, a flood dude walks over the camera towards the other soldier.

Now, that might be more of something in a Cinematic, but imagine if there were transitions like that, where you send some guys out that way and they trigger a cutscene. IT would still have the canon and style of Halo's story, but would present a different aspect of the conflict. Because at the core the Halo Univese does not revolve around Master Chief and to limit every game to one or two people would be to seriously limit the presentation of the universe.

All told, while Halo and it's sucessors, must remain FPS, I would love many genres of game based IN the Halo Universe. I would LOVE some sort of space battle game based on Halo where maybe you pilot a longsword, or maybe captain a ship, or maybe you are an admiral directing 40 ships everywhere from initial formations to tactical maneuvers. It wouldn't make the actual Halo games any LESS awesome or ruin THEIR presentation, but would offer, just as the Books, the Comic Book, etc a broader look into the world that Bungie has started.
