I would not have them operate AT ALL like a hero unit in C&C Generals. I really feel it's the wrong kind of gameplay for this setting. Halo has been mostly a "One against many." Factories that mass produce troops on the battlefield, Spartan heroes that can be replaced on the fly, all removes any kind of character or emotional attachment. Which really impacts the story. [Nevermind the problems with there only being 33 Spartans.]

A brainstorm, then, of better ways to implement Spartans than a generic "hero" title?

My first suggestion: There should be a limited number, give each one a name so the player knows who he has, and if one dies, he dies for good.
