Sep7imus, the thing is, if the issues mentioned in the 1up article were addressed and fixed (or prepared for next game), they would not take away from the fun that non-competitive gamers can have and have been having with Halo 2. The truth is, that these improvements would even make it more fun for all gamers.
The feeling amongst the competitive gamers, is that some fundamental game-play things have been overlooked. Whilst on a casual level this may not be apparent to the gamer, at a genuinely competitive level, these problems are so glaring, that it is not funny. However, these things could have been fixed AND STILL have allowed the bigger casual gamer audience to have as much fun - and I believe, EVEN MORE FUN.

There is a myth is that these issues effect only level 35 people (or some random high number). The truth is, these things effect everyone, and detract from the fun of everyone (level 1, 7, 14, 25, etc)

Fun is not winning. Fun for the competitive player is playing a game that you know does not come down to luck and chance, but comes down on your individual ability as well as your teamwork. When their is balance and fairness in gameplay, then you have the drive to try and improve and work on things. When this has flaws, then the motivation and fun goes.

Anyway, my main point is that these changes would improve the game for everyone - not just the more serious players.
