Interesting point about the manifestations. Yet it also sort of confirms what I was getting at. Gravey is all over the place - presumably with a better knowledge of Forerunner technology than Cortana. I still say he's more powerful. Makes me wonder if the first Halo's database had information on him. If so, she would be prepared for him. She didn't, however, immediately identify him when Chief had his first encounter - which makes me think there is no record. At least not a precise one. Cortana is clearly superior to Covenant technology, and able to apprehend Forerunner constructions. But Gravemind is a wild card. As the Flood are the only enemy which could unite humanity and the Covenant in common purpose, I think he needs to be a menacing figure for the sake of the story. Maverick leaders and a portion of the Covie army are simply not the uber-villains required to cap the series off. Cortana has remained a constant through the evolving plot. Everything else has changed. She's never really been threatened before. H3 may introduce that.
