Perhaps she knows this is the only way back to : Earth. Gravemind is now aboard High Charity and we know he has the ability : to learn/adapt to technologies that aren't his own(Halo teleportations, : etc.). Cortana knows this and knows she could possibly control Gravemind : as well as HC to get back home. : Also, if she could merge with/control Gravemind, who's to say she couldn't : "reprogram" the Flood to only attack non-human DNA based life : forms? Last I saw, speculation on the flood forms and how they took over : the organisms DNA and consequently how the Halos fired, destroying all : sentient life, this seems quite plausible. Granted, it's a little tidy, : and wouldn't do much for a third installment of the game, let alone : antoher book, but it does seem possible, right? : What other atrocities will Cortana learn if she does merge with Gravemind, : considering his age? : just speculating.... The lower forms of the flood can't be reprogrammed like that-they're genetically programmed to do certain tasks. But the flood could be commanded by gravemind in one way or the other, and flood command forms and the like must be under his direct command. I guess she could try a flood redirect-make them strike elsewhere-get rid of the rest of the covenant and stay away from earth and the remaining human worlds, and keep humans safe that way. And I don't think she could reprogram GM entirely-she could change him by being a part of him, but not entirely.
