School for the most part does not teach. It hammers facts into student's brains so they can remember them long enough to pass a test, and if enough people pass the tests the schools get more money. I ask you a question. How many children in school do you know that want to learn? How many come home and avoid anything that looks like learning? School is not a particularly enjoyable experience. Those that excel are held back to the level of the worst students, and the worst students struggle anyway. Only the mediocre do well. When a child is taken out of the school system, normally they take as many months to recover as years they spent in the school system. After that they suddenly WANT to learn things. They don’t have to have it forced on them, they ask for it. Try this. Turn on an educational video for a kid that hasn’t reached school age yet. Chances are, if its an interesting one they will watch it and enjoy it. Now try the save video for a kid who's been in school for a few years, and listen to the groans. After getting facts ground into their brain for so long, anything that even looks like education just isn’t fun, and that’s just sad. : Nobody in the school systems is teaching you WHAT to think, only HOW to : think. I don't see how that is brainwashing. And it would only make sense : for someone who adheres to what they've learned in such a system to excel : and be successful in a society based on all the knowledge that system : provides; so I don't see how you can think it wrong or unfair that someone : who doesn't enter society in the average way will be at some kind of : disadvantage. In this, you are close to right. School prepares you for society. It teaches you to sit at a desk, be quiet, do what you are told and not question authority. All that’s missing is the cubical. : I'm just a huge, huge believer in education. I think that sufficient : education in the masses can really solve a majority of the world's : problems. But let me get off my soapbox. Sure, education is great. It’s something that everyone should have. The public school system is not the best by far. : John 117 wasn't really brainwashed. He was raised in a military environment : that emphasized unit cohesion and taught tactics and strategies for : engagements. He and the other Spartans were raised as soldiers. : Brainwashing implies force used on the mind to erase everything before it : and to inject some new way of thinking. That's not what they did with the : Spartans. I'm not saying it was ethical, I'm just saying there's a : difference there. They were molded into soldiers, not killers or fanatics. : ~Ma1
