Cortana is a hominid's construction designed to pilot ships and guide soldiers through various tactical situations. Gravemind is what ? A (who knows how old) being which can remain active despite all Covenant intelligence, and command the Forerunners technology to beam himself to (presumably) any place to take up business. Remember Cortana's fumbling when she acquired Halo's transport technology ? She was able to (sort of incorrectly) beam Chief onto the Truth & Reconciliation. Gravemind executes such moves with relative ease. The fact that he would even address her (rather than move to attack her somehow) tells he's utterly unafraid of her. As Cortana is a step ahead of John, Gravemind has proven a step ahead of Cortana. 'He used her as a diversion...' Cortana is far from 'the most powerful being in the universe...' She's the emotionally laiden voice of humanity in a cold and ugly battle to secure the fate of the galaxy. Chief will simply go on killing and killing as he must. But Cortana... She's the soul of the story. I think there are much grimmer things in store for her as the story continues.
