In Response To: Re: Halo 2 Matchmaking: Setting a precedent (Captain Spark) : Does anyone just play for fun anymore...... Yes. Tons. It's just that the ones who play for fun aren't nearly as vocal about it as the braggarts and rank-wh0res (both meanings of "rank", by the way) are with their pathetic need to assert dominance over somebody they haven't met because they can't over people they have. I find that equal parts laughable and frustrating, but I don't feel that it's "ruining" the game. (As for pining for the halcyon days of HaloPC, I'm afraid I don't share that... though I had a lot of games that were really fun, and the game introduced me to real-time online play, I also had a lot of games spoiled by griefers, bigots, spawn-campers, and other lowlife. Strangely I'm finding that less frequently on XBL these days now that the Banhammer is swinging than I did in my HaloPC peak.) Yes, there are idiots who obsess about their ranks... so don't play with them. There's about 400,000 other guys to play with each day. Ranking is a powerful tool for matching you with opponents of like skill, and seeing your level increase is a powerful incentive to keep learning and playing. It's also a powerful tool for turning players into frickin' tools. But all-in-all I'd rather have the rankings than not. -- Steve reminds people that the more powerful the tool, the more good it can do when used properly. And the more damage it can do when abused. |
