No, they couldn't have. This was a console war, one which the Xbox was falling behind in. Microsoft didn't have another killer app in that generation - it didn't have a Gears of War to fill the gaps between Halo titles as it does now. The system desperately needed a flagship online title to sell its' main attraction, Xbox Live, to the masses, and that game was Halo 2. Microsoft had already wanted the game to be released the year before, and there was no way in hell they would have let it be delayed. You're right about one thing - all Microsoft cares about is money - and had Halo 2 been delayed and Bungie given more time, the billions they lost on the Xbox console would have been doubled and the system would have finished third in the console war as the focus shifted to next-gen consoles.
