In Response To: Re: I'm curious... (Ain Soph Aur) :Not lounging around raising kids or whatever. I haven't delved into the HGN discussion having only received it a few days ago, but I can't help but discourage what I see as sexist comments concerning the female Spartan "Maria." I've seen too often from other posters, including Ain Soph Aur, the belief that Maria is shunning her responsibilities as a military commando by raising a family. I, on the other hand, see her decision, and in fact her character, as a humanization of the Spartans. The novels, particularly First Strike, emphasized the Master Chief and his colleagues as men and women versus cyborgs and machines like the games arguably portray the MC. That characterization is a matter of medium, however, it's been said numerous times that different mediums allow different expressions: movies, video games, novels, comic books, etc. After reading First Strike I commented on these forums on my appreciation for the humanizing of the Spartans in that MC held out hope that his comrades had survived the glassing of Reach, that when they met they made a smile gesture across their faceplate, that MC went back into the fire to save Linda, etc. I was given some weird looks in a forum kind of way, but I still think that it is important for the Halo universe that we as an audience relate to the Spartans as fellow human beings with human emotions and desires. If Maria chooses to quit her military lifestyle, I see it as a supremely difficult decision for a person raised all their life to serve the military. It shows the power of the human mind, individuality versus group think. You can't expect someone with a family to up and leave. If we're talking about the possibility of total annihilation, then I can't but sympathize her desire to spend as much time as she can with her family. Cheers to Bungie and more later... |
