I agree with what you're saying. Even if people don't like the stories in the graphic novel, there are plenty of things in there that are new and exciting. Even though I did like the stories a lot, I think it's a good reference too. The graphic novel showed us what civilians are like in 2552, where the Chief's armor came from, and what the Arbiter was like when he was Supreme Commander. You can look back and see exactly how Half-Jaw was injured. In fact, we probably learn more about Half-Jaw in "Last Voyage" than we did in all of Halo 2. These are all things we didn't know before, and I think it fleshes out a lot.
