I personally found the HGN to be quite worth every penny I : spent on it, if not only for the artwork but the depth of the stories : presented. When one looks past the obvious stuff, and pays careful : attention, a whole slew of surprising bits of information begin to pop up. I agree with what you're saying. Even if people don't like the stories in the graphic novel, there are plenty of things in there that are new and exciting. Even though I did like the stories a lot, I think it's a good reference too. The graphic novel showed us what civilians are like in 2552, where the Chief's armor came from, and what the Arbiter was like when he was Supreme Commander. You can look back and see exactly how Half-Jaw was injured. In fact, we probably learn more about Half-Jaw in "Last Voyage" than we did in all of Halo 2. These are all things we didn't know before, and I think it fleshes out a lot.
