The galaxy is a big place and the meteor remains were over 50,000 years old. Today such a finding might spur incredible scientific analysis, however, in the not so distant future, the idea of meeting another possibly more advanced alien race can be quite terrifying. Even today, military secrets aren't declassified for many years (something like 50 years after the fact), it would not be unreasonable for branches of the government in the 26th century to keep quite a lot of stuff covered up even from other branches of the military. There is plenty of room to theorize that ONI or some group within the UNSC knew about aliens and possibly the Covenant long before the first conflicts. : I suspect it has suffered a major setback - the Spartans who were supposed to
: As far as he knows, the mission's failed, or at least on indefinite hold. True the mission may have failed, but that is the beauty of it all. Now Cortana and the Master Chief can adapt to new missions. You see missions are nothing more than a means to meet certain objectives. Missions change all the time and once they are committed to, they often get aborted if anything goes wrong. The objectives, however, stay mostly the same because they are more strategic than mission parameters. However, even strategic objectives change and so one key element going into Halo 2 is that the MC and Cortana are cut off from the main communications channels as required by the Cole Protocol and the fact that the POA was destroyed. The MC and Cortana must no adapt and formulate their own strategic objectives. Number one priority is no doubt building some sort of foundation to build on, that could mean establishing a base of operations (a mobile one like the Longsword or perhaps somewhere else), followed by accessing the situation, looking for survivors, evading capture and destruction by the Covenant, building a sphere of influence (probably an invisible one so not to draw attention), etc. Also, Cortana knows more now since she has been in the Core and so a new objective might be to get that information to the UNSC. In other words, the welfare of Earth is very low priority on the strategic objectives at the moment for the MC and Cortana. However, if it was discovered that the Covenant knew of the location of Earth, then objectives would change and then a new mission might be planned such as the capture of a Covenant ship and crew and possibly a Prophet or other leader. Right now, without more information, the current missions would probably be to rescue survivors. | |
