In Response To: Re: More "First Strike" questions *spoilers* (Jillybean) : MacKay crashed the ship in order to stop any Flood getting off. It seemed
well... actually she set a grenade off and blew up one of those magical "hey marine, guard this pipe because the slightest damage to it will destroy the whole ship"-type objects. The general idea was that positively, absolutely nothing, including a bunch of Flood who had stowed away, survived. I find the idea that anything could survive being on the ring after it's destruction a little silly. Anyone not done in by the insane concussion would get promptly sucked into space as the atmosphere failed. Even if somebody was concealed "below decks", all of Halo's temperature controls and energy generators would also fail, and they would freeze to death. Assuming the didn't suffocate first, or get torn to ribbons as the ring shredded itself under the weight of it's own rapidly dissipating centrifugal force. I like to think that Bungie has lots of control over the plot of these books, but I'm not sure how much influence they really exert. Some of the fluff actually doesn't fit all that well with the game. Remember that we're back to eric nylund here, the guy who characterized the grunts as semi-intelligent dogs. I got turned off FoR when I read the grunt parts... I love grunts. The little guys have such... PLUCK. While the author of "The Flood" seemed to have played the game on easy before writing the book, Nylund isn't all that in touch with the game universe. This brings up my final point; it's dangerous to use the books as de facto guides to the plots of the games. Especially the Nylund books. Jury's still out (we haven't read the book yet!) but I have some doubts. |
