Actually, when he characterized them as barking dogs, he meant more of their mass attack form. Think about it, they do grunt, bark, and look like dogs when on all fours.

Also, whatever you read in the books is legit. Bungie story bible keeps the nice people on track. But they are still relatively free to fill in the fun. But if it says he got on The Bungler of Booby in the book, he got on it, no matter how wacky it sounds.
