Interesting ideas here. Your assumption seems to be that a planet with the equiv. of one gee is made up of similar materials and proportions; also similar distributions. While this is certainly true of Earth, I wonder if terra-like worlds might exist with either lower densities (and larger surface areas) or higher densities (and smaller surface areas)? For that matter, some non- (or near-) terran worlds and moons would be candidates for terraforming.

I cannot understand why the Halo exists when terraforming seems to be easier to accomplish (though much time seems to be required). I think the Halo must also have another purpose besides its use as a habitat. Its position (strategic?) and function (weapon or Gate?) will become clear when the game is out.
