Very good point. It's the same thing as if one had gone to the Earth's center of mass (IF it were hollow) - gravity from the Halo would act as a stabalizing influence, since it would be nearly (except for variations in mass due to the inner surface of the Halo) equal in all directions pointing towards the Halo. One could use such a satellite in order to provide GPS coordinates to the surface (though three or more satellites could be more helpful... depending upon how accurate the systems between the satellite and the portable locater were). It could also be used to obtain real-time imaging of the Halo's surface, for updating the holographic display (in a map room?) we see in various Halo movies. Additionally.... this location would be strategically critical to anyone seeking to conquer and maintain the Halo, since a weapons platform at the center would be able to reach just about any location. You could park a ship there and drop units and materials to anywhere on the Halo with a minimum of effort. Would you consider this null-axis an "orbit" of sorts? (Probably not, but I was just thinking of the term, "orbital bombardment.") -Noctavis |
