He does say "as far as the atmosphere, etc. is concerned." I think perhaps he's asking how the atmosphere, the ocean and other fluid components of the Halo were introduced. They couldn't have been on the Halo before it started spinning, since they would have floated away due to the lack of pseudo-gravity; even once the Halo got up to its current speed, any air or water dropped onto it still wouldn't feel normal gravity until friction with the ground gave it the same angular velocity as the rest of the ring. I'd imagine, therefore, that when first introduced, the air and water were in some compact, rigid form which was relatively easy to accelerate. Perhaps they were frozen and dropped on the Halo, then allowed to thaw and vaporize; perhaps they were extracted from the rock by some bioterraforming process; perhaps they were simply brought in in "tanker" spaceships which approached the Halo's surface and matched its velocity before dropping their payloads. I agree with you that accelerating the ring itself would not be particularly difficult--given a long enough time frame, the mechanism could even be self-powered: a few ramjets attached to the ring's rim, or even some soellar-driven fins mirrored on one side and black or transparent on the other. --SiliconDream |
