In Response To: Re: Spin that ring (Dispatcher) > I think that there is no compelling reason to
Actually I came up with 4,000 miles, not km. I've seen (or at least I think I've seen) reports of the ring being both 10,000 MILES and 10,000 KILOMETERS in diameter; I chose to believe the figure in miles for no good reason. Regardless, the answers are rough, and miles or kilometers they will be the same order of magnitude. Why make the surface area roughly equal to that of the Earth? Well, there's no definite answer, especially since we don't know the design purpose of the ring. I chose to assume that since the ringbuilders gave it artificial gravity of approximately earth-normal, they might have been trying to create an approximately earthlike environment. A planet with one gee of gravity is going to be approximately the same size as the Earth. If the ring was a sort of species-saving space lifeboat or something, they'd need a lot of surface area to carry their people and infrastructure. [Of course, Earth's usable surface area is significantly smaller than its total surface area.] More Information Is Needed. L. Tankersley |
