Exactly.
There are big differences between nailed-down things and things that are not precisely nailed down.
It is an extreme violation of the 4th wall to change details like this; as Loftus here mentions, the ending cutscene of Halo 3 can't make sense with the re-design of the FUD. It just can't. And that's a mistake. It doesn't matter how much spin you put on it, that is a freaking mistake. Period. End of story.
The LEAST that they could have done was include a bay on the redesign that would allow for the ending cutscene to make sense. But they didn't. Period. End of story. Thus: Mistake.
Now, that's not saying that it's a HUGE, Halo-ruining deal; we're not dealing with a situation where Master Chief is both dead and alive here or anything on that level; but it doesn't have to be on that level for it to be unacceptable, because there is simply no excuse for it. In "Awakening: The Art of Halo 4", on page 122 they say, and I quote:
"The challenge with the Forward Unto Dawn was keeping the same balance of shapes to the space ship. The initial ship in Halo 3 felt like an aggregation of boxes, and we wanted to make it look more like a single object. Even if it was different, we wanted it to be identified as the Forward Unto Dawn while still making it a different vessel. There are a lot of similarities, still, if you put them side by side. We also introduced strong burners, which is what we implemented from what would have been seen on Apollo or ships from the 60's.

Why why why why why?
That was completely and utterly unnecessary and created problems rather than removing any or maintaining the previous number of problems. This is not the way to approach the history of a franchise. There are all kinds of changes that can be made that won't be a big deal, or that will be an obvious improvement on the functionality of the previous version, but THIS was not one of them.
I don't even care that much about ships. I don't! I'm not a boat guy, wet or vacuum.
My issue isn't with the ship's redesign -- it's with the attitude that they approached this situation with. Don't even get me started on the atrocities seen on page 99 of that book. :(
