In Response To: Re: Stop with your logic (uberfoop)

: For the most part yes, though emotional engagement can very much be dependant
: on believability. If you detach the audience, they're not going to accept
: the things that work about the story. What's actually happening if the
: rules are being broken? Why should I care if so and so did what if he
: could have done that other thing, and doesn't he look like kind of an
: idiot now? Some sorts of nonsensicalities are swallowable... some aren't.
: Obviously it's subjective, though.
: It's related to why people often lose interest in "overblown"
: action scenes. When some terrible event remains in the realm of internal
: believability, you can create tension. When something absolutely
: ridiculous occurs out of nowhere, suddenly the whole thing falls on its
: face into a big "eh, whatever." This is exactly what my friends
: thought about Peter Jackson's interpretation of the stone giant scene from
: The Hobbit . Started out intense and absolutely awesome, and then the
: cliff face turned out to be a thingy and they did the thing, and the scene
: immediately fell apart and became uninteresting.

: //===============

: Perhaps related, I feel like modern stories frequently burden themselves
: horribly with explaining every stupid mechanical detail, to the point that
: if they don't explain something or if they make a mistake the whole thing
: comes crashing down. It often works better to take it as an assumption
: that the mechanical details aren't relevant, as you are therefore able to
: streamline bulky expositions of detail into "and then this
: happened" while focusing on the emotions and relations of things.
: Plot details can stay unobtrusive, avoiding suspension of disbelief
: issues, while allowing everything else to thrive. People sometimes
: complain about "as you know, ..." moments, but they felt crazy
: refreshing when I read The Hobbit recently.
: That's also where stuff like Halo 1 does so ridiculously well. The plot is
: absurdly skeletal; the way it's woven together with the gameplay and art
: design to create narrative flow is insane. I've often argued that its
: closest neighbor in the world of film is probably Battleship Potemkin ;
: absolutely skeletal plot, nothing resembling classical characters after
: the first bit, perfectly coherent flow between all components.
: Obviously you can't quite pull a Halo 1 or Battleship Potemkin if you're
: going for classical character drive, though.

: //===============

: If I find that the lack of actual reason behind Didact's "IF REASON WILL
: NOT STOP YOU, PERHAPS FORCE WILL AT LEAST DELAY YOU" line damages the
: storytelling by making an ancient Forerunner warlord come off as an angry
: waambulancing 2-year-old who happens to be able to speak formally, is that
: an issue with emotional drive, or with logical coherence?

: (And, perhaps a more exciting, but related question: How did the writers
: intend for the Didact to come across?)

I think it might have been more effective if the Didact had been a pragmatic Forerunner general drafting earth city by city into the promethean army, with the destruction of the human race as more of an unfortunate side effect. The evil red-eyed vampire lusting for our blood just came out of left field.

That would of course require the need for such an army, which could have been foreshadowed at some point or left at the end to setup Halo 5, but is currently non-existent.

It's a possible future SpOps reveal but the limited story telling aspect already leaves a lot to the imagination, and if that is the case it may end up being paid DLC that should've been in the main game.
