Consistency and the Rules of Two Worlds

In Response To: Re: Stop with your logic (Ibeechu)

: Totally disagree. Sometimes, you really can't. Sometimes a story simply works
: best when you go against logic. Again, like I said in a post above, I
: think the trick is to make it appear logical on the surface.

: "Believable" is a word we throw around a lot in animation. It
: exists counter to "realistic." A shot doesn't ever have to be
: realistic so long as it's believable. If the audience can buy it, it
: doesn't matter at all how you got there. I've done plenty of shots where,
: if the camera is moved just a little bit, you can see that the movements
: are impossible or don't make any sense. But part of my job is to make the
: audience not notice and not care. And sometimes it really is a dichotomy.
: Sometimes I just cannot get a pose right until I break the character's
: elbow. I very much think the same is true for storytelling.

You know, I kind of agree with this. However, I somewhat take issue with some of the implications.

When you bend believability to achieve a scene and the "rules" you betray are rules that we adhere by in this reality, it's a lot more forgivable then bending the "rules" of the make-believe world that is associated with the story being told.

This is because when people suspend their disbelief, they have to suspend it on something. When they can't, it takes them out of the experience because they have difficulty relating to it.

When someone has already differed to the consistency of the fake world, they have already forsaken the consistency of this world for whatever aspects they needed to do so. If you then betray the consistency of the fake world you provide a bit of a conundrum. Which world do they go with now? Is there a third, new set of rules and consistency to hang your disbelief on?

I do acknowledge that people tend to have different thresholds for this as well. I consider myself to be far more lenient than most when it comes to real life logic and rule bending, if it serves the story or helps make the moment. (Example: The non-nonsensical physics and world of Minecraft don't bother me one bit.) However, I do have limits and when something repeatedly breaks established in-universe consistency AND the rules of the fake world AND the rules of the real world, I'm just left scratching my head. I get a feeling that what I'm experiencing is some sort of weird dream set in that universe, or a parallel universe at best.

And even after I've said this, something nags at me. I know that sometimes you *have* to bend real life believability to make something work, but a little voice starts whispering "Did you really *have* to? Maybe you aren't creative enough to come up with something that satisfies both criteria."

That's why I think everyone should always aim for the highest pinnacle of both respects. And don't play fast and loose with that ideal, keep it at the forefront and only break it when you can't find another way out.

Halo 4 did not do this, it played fast and loose with that rule, more than any Halo that preceded it. I think a burning desire to "make it their own" clouded their judgment when it came to keeping things consistent and the end product does feel very distinct. Unfortunately, I have a lot of trouble reconciling their Halo with the Halo that came before, the Halo I fell in love with.

The best start to Halo 5 for me would be Chief waking up in his cryo pod, Halo 4 only being a feverish dream, or a distorted premonition.
