Contrary to what you say, it's not about turning your brain off. It's about picking and choosing when, where, and why logic is important, if it is at all. Logic can go fuck itself if it's for the sake of the story. And, where I agree with you, Quirel, is that while Halo 4 may ignore logic for the sake of the story, the story is still shitty. As for the Loftus approach. There's definitely something to be said for ignoring retcons or things of that sort if it makes a better story. But the far more important thing to remember is that if the audience notices these things, they are taken out of the story. And that's a significant failure. In fact, it's kind of impossible to write a story that's 100% internally consistent. The trick is to not make it matter. To reference the Hulk's article above, the Joker's plan in TDK doesn't make any god damned sense. But did you care while you were watching? Of course not! The movie is so well-made that you never for a second notice how stupid it is. In contrast, it really does matter that the Chief's armor changes. It does matter that Cortana looks different. It does matter that we have no idea what the Didact's beef is. The first two matter for arbitrary internal consistency reasons (at least with regard to the whole series). The last one is just poor storytelling. They both make you go "huh?" and those "huh?"s are never resolved.
