I agree that emotional engagement is more : important, but there's no reason you can't have both. Totally disagree. Sometimes, you really can't. Sometimes a story simply works best when you go against logic. Again, like I said in a post above, I think the trick is to make it appear logical on the surface. "Believable" is a word we throw around a lot in animation. It exists counter to "realistic." A shot doesn't ever have to be realistic so long as it's believable. If the audience can buy it, it doesn't matter at all how you got there. I've done plenty of shots where, if the camera is moved just a little bit, you can see that the movements are impossible or don't make any sense. But part of my job is to make the audience not notice and not care. And sometimes it really is a dichotomy. Sometimes I just cannot get a pose right until I break the character's elbow. I very much think the same is true for storytelling. A house can't really be lifted by only a few dozen thousand balloons, but Up makes us not even question it at all because it's set up perfectly and it's completely necessary to the story. Realistic? Logical? No way. Believable? Absolutely. And Up does not work without it. It's a necessary breaking of logic, a breaking of the elbow, for the sake of a story, and the results are breathtaking.
