They didn't have that option. Leia assumed that the Falcon was being tracked. How could she lead the DS to a remote location and arrange a rebel ambush? Where ever she went the DS was sure to follow. That makes it hard to have private chats and arrange traps.
She gambled that the info would help find a weakness that the rebel ships could exploit. Luckily she was right. I agree that it could all have gone horribly wrong but at that late point in the film I wouldn't want an extra half hour of extra machinations to contrive a message to the rebels to prearrange a rendevous-trap.

: a clear shot blow up the moon with the rebel base on the other side?
Maybe the gas giant was too big to blow up. Maybe they didn't know in advance which moon held the base and maybe they exited hyperspace in the same spot that the Falcon did. Maybe the ship tracking kit only gives you the location of the point of exiting hyperspace. If Leia surmised or knew this then she could have instructed Han to exit on the far side of the planet. Or maybe his exit location was pot luck but still put the DS in a bad position to hit the moon.

Indeed. Lucas should have established that the trench was better sheltered with only a few danger spots. Maybe it was more sheltered than out in the open but Lucas would have had to have established that the area where the fighters entered the trench was significantly safer than near to the exhaust port.

OK, I agree. I'm not in nit picking mode at that point. I'm in seventh heaven. I saw that film 11 times * when it first came out and always left the theater walking at a hundred miles an hour because I was so charged up. (* cost me a fortune but was well worth it)
