It's something that's taken me a while to realize, but most people do specify when they're presenting an opinion versus asserting a fact. You don't, and that's one of the things that's confused me when discussing things with you. You're right, we should be aware that anything you say is your opinion, but it can be difficult with your phrasing. Example: the above statement re: Reach. NsU Soldier suggested that Reach hit the emotional beats just fine for him, and your response isn't "Curious, I didn't feel the same," it's a complete denial of his statement. That makes it appear as though you are presenting fact and not opinion. : Sure, but the difference is not as pronounced as you think, and making your : story airtight logically is essentially impossible since the narrative : construction is always in opposition to reality. One of the basic rules of storytelling is that actions logically follow from previous actions. As with all rules, it can be broken, but it has to be done intentionally and with purpose, and not just because you don't care. Of course the sci-fi epic is in opposition to reality, but that doesn't mean that it can safely ignore B follows A. : Those are all absolutely tiny things that have no bearing on the emotional : aspect of the storytelling, and for those to take you out pretty much : validate the paragraph you were resounding to. : I've seen Back to the Future 200 times, and that movie makes no sense : logically but I still love it. And finally: a story doesn't have to follow logically to be enjoyable. It also doesn't have to not. Anything that is enjoyed by a person has merits, and we all enjoy things for different reasons. Back to the Future is great fun, but not particularly deep. That doesn't make it bad but it means you're enjoying it for different reasons than you enjoy something else. A lot of Halo fans, at least those which follow the campaign and don't stick exclusively to multiplayer, like a good action romp, but not at the expense of a logically consistent story.
