On to the rest of the article: At least in my case, I really liked the story, but I admit that was because I was obsessed with the lore from The Fall of Reach, to Forward Unto Dawn, to Cryptum, and followed things better than most people. It's still a dangerous road for any director to follow: While I didn't feel lost with the terms "Mantle", "Ancilla", or with who the Librarian and the Didact were, the common player would be -- especially so with the retcons Halo has gotten infamous for. Emotionally, I think it was the strongest point, as it made it a more personal story for both the Master Chief and Cortana: It gave the protagonist a powerful foil on a personal level, it showed the risk of losing his closest companion of several years, it showed him failing, and it showed him rising from that very failure and fighting. That being said, a story also depends on willing suspension of disbelief, and abusing it can make your readers stop trusting the storyteller when they begin wondering why some things happen. Reading reactions everywhere, I think it depends on the individual, really, and this fandom is far too varied for 343i to get a clear shot of what people in general want. Ending? it made me cry. A lot. But I have to agree it could have worked if there had been a little more explanation, and allowed the final encounter with the Didact to be an actual boss fight (people complained back in the days of Halo 2 about how "boss fights didn't fit Halo". The true problem was that there was no emotional willingness to end the bastards). I see the faults of the ending (and of the story as a whole), and could handwave and theorize what happened that allowed Cortana to save him, and in other cases try to forgive some tropes that are used too much (such as the Didact not killing the Chief when he had the chance); but at least in my case, it didn't stop me from being emotionally engaged at "Composer", "Midnight", and the ending. I do think it was a very good game, and I did like the story a lot, but at the same time, giving things the time to be explained wouldn't have hurt the suspension of disbelief I mentioned earlier.
